2019 Ananda Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains

Melanie Ananda Benedetti died shortly before harvest 2019, at age 44. The 2019 Ananda Pinot Noir is the end product of all the love, grief, sorrow, loss, and my desire to honor her by moving forward. I was a mess, and threw myself into harvest with only 1 clear objective: channel all of the above into something that can bring others joy amid sadness. Here is the result.

She was made by first making a direct-pressed rosé from Split Rail Pinot Noir, and then moving the pressed skins into a fermenter, where another ton of Pommard clone from Split Rail was destemmed on top. The resulting fermentation was mellow and deliberate, a lot like Mel was, with amazing blue fruit aromas. Much later, a barrel of Lester Family Vineyard Pinot Noir was blended in during the wine’s 18 months of barrel aging.

Like Melanie, this one took her time. She will also wait patiently in your cellar for many years, should you be so inclined.

I love the wine, and Wine Enthusiast agreed, by giving her 94 points for the 2nd year in a row. --JB
