As noted viticulturist Prudy Foxx has said, Pinot Noir is a social butterfly.  She likes to party with her neighbors.  This wine, from three extremely unique Corralitos vineyards, is a party in a glass.  Two of the vineyards sit at 450’ elevation on Pleasant Valley Road and are farmed by “Grape Whisperer” Prudy Foxx, in one of the coolest microclimates in our appellation.  The third is on the mountain above them- Split Rail Vineyard at the top of Tindall Mountain (1700’), which is the mountain that separates Eureka Canyon and Browns Valley in Corralitos.  The fog-influenced Corralitos valley vineyards lend structure and elegance to the wild berry and forest notes of Split Rail, resulting in a wine of unique complexity that will age well for many years to come.

Winemaker Notes:

She’s very focused and intense. There is acid in abundance, balanced oak that adds a slightly toasty quality and a velvety back-note, and grippy tannin backed by a graphite-like minerality.  The fruit is cranberry and red cherry, with spicebox, toast and redwood duff notes that allow it to evolve nicely in the glass.  Probably the most structured of the 2014 vintage, a great selection for longterm aging.

  • Hand harvested at 23.0 – 24.1º brix.
  • 95% destemmed.
  • Aged on the lees in French oak, 45% new.
  • Coopers:  Mistral, Ermitage, Rousseau, Leroi, Francois Freres.
  • Yeast: Native, AMH, BRG, RC212. pH 3.59.  TA 6.1 g/L.
  • Alcohol 13.9%.

Hicks Vineyard was 90% destemmed with a 5% saignée.  Lester saw a 2.5% saignée, while the Pommard clones from Split Rail saw no saignee.  Each lot was cold soaked 3-5 days at 40º with no SO2 and then allowed to gradually warm up until a native fermentation began.  Inoculations occurred between 18 and 21 brix.  Pressed at 1-4º brix directly to barrel. Weekly battonnage for 3 months.  Each lot, with the exception of Lester, was cellared separately and racked once in June.  The final blend took place when racked to the bottling tank in July.  Bottled unfined and unfiltered in late July.
