2014 Pinot Noir, Mardikian Vineyard, Sonoma Coast

Price: $75.00

The southwestern-facing hillside vineyard, just four miles from the Pacific Ocean near the town of Freestone, is planted to a variety of clones, and we elected to accept the Martini and 777 lots. Planted in 2009, its first harvest was in 2013.  Mardikian is the estate vineyard of our close friends at MacPhail Family Wines and is the result of a close collaboration between winemaker James MacPhail and grower Jim Pratt.  Mardikian has the rare distinction of overlapping 3 very coveted appellations:  Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley and the Green Valley of Russian River Valley sub-appellation.  We choose to designate it as Sonoma Coast, due to the extremely cool climate these magnificent grapes are allowed to thrive in.

Winemaker Notes:

Sonoma Sap.  Rich and textured, a rich, velvety explosion of Sonoma Coast flavor intensity rich in red cherry and cola notes, with that elusive, earthy “Pinosity” laying underneath.  She’s got me really excited with her depth of character.  This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a wine with a world-class winemaker I have long admired.

  • Hand harvested 9/19 at 25.5º brix.
  • 100% destemmed.
  • Aged on the lees in French oak, 30% new.
  • Coopers:  Ambrosia Complex and Ermitage.
  • Yeast: Native, AMH, RC212. pH 3.61.  TA 6.2 g/L.

100% destemmed and brought to 45º.  Allowed to gradually warm up over 5 days until a native fermentation began.  Inoculated at 23º brix with AMH in one fermentor and RC212 in the other.  Pressed at 2º directly to barrel.  Weekly battonnage for 3 months.

Robert Parker:
“Coming from the Sonoma Coast AVA, the 2014 Pinot Noir Family Reserve Selezione Susie Mardikian Vineyard was completely destemmed and spent ten months in French oak. It has a fruit-forward, big, rich, mouth-filling profile to go with terrific notes of black raspberries, spicy oak, toasted bread and dried underbrush. Youthful, concentrated, impeccably balanced and with serious length, give this fabulous Pinot Noir 2-3 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following decade or more. Score: 93.

Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Deep aromas of black cherry coulis and vanilla pod. A showy wine, with pleasing flavors of dark cherries and purple berries accented with just the right note of oak and framed by soft, nearly invisible fine tannins. Powerfully flavored, yet elegant, with plush presence on the palate, and a generosity that persists through the attack and finish. A score magnet!
