Price: $36.00

Out of stock

At Split Rail Vineyard, 1700’ above the Monterey Bay on a Corralitos mountaintop, a rare selection of clones known as “David Bruce Selection” lends a silky texture and floral aromas to the earthy, spicebox base of UCD clone 32, a clone traditionally used in the production of sparkling wine. These heritage clones are given depth by a core of Pommard clones planted in a cooler block at the bottom of the vineyard. The vines are 30 years old, and are typically dry-farmed.  Clones: Martini, Wadenswil, Mt Eden, Swan, 32, Pommard 4.

Winemaker Notes:

She’s youthful and lively on the surface, intriguing and thought-provoking in private.  There is nothing obvious about her, though she opens up to reveal layer after layer during careful contemplation.  The fruit is olallieberry (aka black raspberry), hints of orange peel, with notes of darker fruit laying in wait. There’s a fascinating chalky or saline minerality underneath elusive redwood forest notes in a long, almost savory finish. Slightly grippy tannins will assist this wine in being a good cellar selection, as she should age very gracefully over 10 years.

  • Yeast: Native, AMH, RC212.  pH 3.62.  TA 5.9 g/L.

Winemaking:

100% destemmed and brought to 45º.  Allowed to gradually warm up over 5 days until a native fermentation began.  1/6th was allowed to finish a native fermentation, the other bins were inoculated at 20º brix with AHM and RC212.  Hand punchdowns twice daily. Pressed to tank at 3º brix and allowed to finish in-barrel.  Inoculated with MBR31. Lees stirred every 2 weeks for 3 months, aged on the lees until July. Racked via argon pressure wand once in July and racked to tank for bottling in mid-August.  Bottled unfined and unfiltered on August 18th and 19th.

Reviews:

PinotFile:
Moderately light cherry color in the glass. Lovely nose with alluring aromas of Bing cherry, sandalwood and spice cabinet. A delightful wine that is deep on the palate with an impressive attack of fleshy dark cherry, black raspberry and spice flavors complimented by a subtle vein of savory herbs in the background. The fine-grain, slightly weighty tannins provide good structure, and the persistent finish brings waves of vivid, flamboyant fruit. Score: 94.
