In 2012 we held back a small amount of our Split Rail Chardonnay pressing, which is normally barrel-fermented, and fermented & aged it in a tank instead. The unoaked result is a vivid expression of the unique minerality of Chardonnay from Split Rail Vineyard’s sandstone/limestone mountain soils.
Just after fermentation but before aging, we blended in a small amount of the barrel-fermented wine from this same vintage, which adds a subtle depth to the crisp apple, pear and granite notes that are Split Rail’s signature. We decided also to let the warm 2012 growing season show through in this wine rather than manipulating it, and the end product is a bit bigger than years past as a result- making for a great porch-pounding summer party wine. Serve ice cold with BBQ’d Halibut and thank us in the morning!
